The woman behind the house
When Betina Lund Hammarberg first stepped into the old building in Hejls, she had no doubts. Although the house needed some loving care, she immediately felt at home and thought: "This could be a fantastic place."
As a trained textile designer from the Kolding School of Design, Betina has created a unique 700 square meter house, where colors and patterns are combined in surprising ways. "I like to work with contrasts and combine things that don't immediately go together. It's like making collages, where you take different parts out of their usual context and put them into a new one, so that together they create a new story."
In 2018, Betina and her family bought the house and made her dream of running a bed & breakfast a reality. Today, the house houses both a bed & breakfast, party rooms and Betina's Gallery Nebenting with art, design and vintage.
The old building in Hejls was built in 1937 as a retirement home, after Miss Louise Momsen Petersen donated money for the purpose in 1931. For the first 50 years, elderly people lived here, helping with practical tasks and growing vegetables. The house was very much a home for the residents, and there was both coziness and celebration.
In 1988, it ceased to be a retirement home, and the house was used for various purposes, including as a local history archive and day center.
After standing empty for several years, Betina Lund Hammarberg and her family purchased the building in 2018 and rebuilt it as an active house full of life and activities.
